چکیده

Ecological investigations concentrate on the biosphere where all life on earth takes place. The biosphere consists of a part of the atmosphere, of a part of the crust of the earth, of the lithosphere and of nearly the whole hydrosphere. In different ecosystems as, e.g., woodlands, rivers, lakes, deserts, oceans, or the deep sea systems, by exchange processes close correlations exist between the living creatures and their habitat. Radionuclides entering the spheres of existence are involved in this exchange. Those from the habitat can be taken up by the animate one, exchanged within the organisms of an ecosystem or passed through to others. Plants living autotrophically by photosynthesis are at the beginning of the food-chain. In contrast, animals are dependent on heterotrophical organic nourishment. Besides the incorporation of radioactive substances from the inorganic compounds, an exchange or passage, respectively between the organisms has to be taken into account. To finish the circuit, particularly adapted microorganisms exist which are nourished saprophytically by decomposition of organic compounds. In contrast to most chemical substances for which toxicity is commonly related to specific molecular structures, radiotoxicity of the isotopes depends on the radiological characteristics as well as on the molecular structure of the radioactive substance. An alteration of the chemical structure of the molecule comprising a radionuclide does not remove the radionuclide from the environment but merely changes its kinetic behaviour in the biosphere or can lead Sources of environmental radionuclides and recent results in analyses of bioaccumulation. Rare Earth Elements as Emerging Contaminants and Applications, Occurrence, Sources, and Environmental and Human Health Risks Caused by Them: A Review Study

Background and Objectives: Rare earth elements (REEs) are examples of emerging contaminants that have recently been increasingly spread to the environment through the extensive use in modern commodities, medical facilities, petroleum refining, mining, chemical fertilizers, electronic wastes and recycling plants. However, these elements are considered due to their potential human and ecological ...

A Comparative Study of Field Gamma-ray Spectrometry by NaI(Tl) and HPGe Detectors in the South Caspian Region

Natural radionuclides present in soil as well as certain anthropogenic radionuclides released to the environment are the major contributors to terrestrial outdoor exposures. In the assessment of human exposures from environmental radioactivity, besides the conventional method of soil and vegetation sampling combined with laboratory based analyses of environmental media, the other choice would b...

A Study on Transfer Factors of Environmental Radionuclides: Radionuclide Transfer from Soil to Different Varieties of Rice in Gorgan, Iran

Introduction Natural and artificial radionuclides are the main sources of human radiation exposure. These radionuclides, which are present in the environment, can enter the food chain. Rice is one of the most important food components in Iran. Radionuclides by transferring from soil to rice and entering the human body can affect human health. Materials and Methods Fourteen samples of different ...

Heavy metals bioaccumulation in fish of southern Iran and risk assessment of fish consumption

Background: This study purposed to assess the health risks of heavy metals including nickel (Ni), chromium (Cr), mercury (Hg), and lead (Pb) in three widely-consumed fish from the coast of Bandar Abbas (Persian Gulf) and to determine the maximum amounts allowed for consumption according to the degree of contamination. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in the summer and fall of ...

Estimation of Natural Radioactivity and Radiation Exposure in Environmental Soil Samples of Golestan, Iran

Introduction: Considering the risk of radiation, the measurement of the natural radiation sources seems to be necessary. In this study, the concentrations of the natural radionuclides, namely 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K, were measured in the soil samples taken from different locations of Golestan, Iran. The measurement results can also be used as a baseline to evaluate the impact of non-nuclear activ...
